Building a Future-Ready Port State Control Regime in West and Central Africa

A future-ready Port State Control regime requires more than compliance.

MACN contributed to the inaugural Abuja MoU Regional Workshop, bringing together senior maritime leadership from across West and Central Africa under the theme: “A Future-Ready Port State Control Regime: Leadership, People, Governance, and Performance for Safer Maritime Systems.”

MACN highly commends the Abuja MoU Secretariat and its Member States on the launch of a five-year Capacity-Building Program, supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

Discussions centered on a shared ambition to move from compliance-based systems toward performance- and risk-based oversight, underpinned by stronger regional coordination and data-driven decision-making. This marks a meaningful step toward strengthening maritime safety and governance across the region.

Building on its long-standing partnership with the Abuja MoU Secretariat and its Member States, MACN remains committed to supporting capacity development, promoting integrity and transparency, and contributing to the region’s 2030 vision for Port State Control.
