MACN Advances Practical Integrity Measures in Egypt
MACN recently visited Egypt to continue strengthening its collaboration with the Maritime Transport and Logistics Sector (MTLS), the Suez Canal Authority, and MACN members operating across the country. The visit builds on the formal partnership launched with MTLS in 2025 and MACN’s longer‑term engagement to address integrity risks in Egyptian ports and waterways.
During the visit, MACN representatives, together with local partner Eldib Pandi, conducted field visits to the ports of Alexandria, Damietta, and Port Said East. Discussions with port authorities focused on concrete operational improvements, drawing on MACN’s Port Integrity Commitments Scorecards as a practical reference point for identifying gaps and opportunities at the port‑vessel interface.
A key outcome of the visit was agreement by port authorities to designate formal Points of Contact and to publish their contact details on port websites. This step provides the private sector with a clear and direct channel to raise concerns about improper demands and operational barriers, strengthening transparency and accountability in day‑to‑day port interactions. The measure also supports faster resolution of issues and reinforces trust between public authorities and maritime operators.
The visit concluded with MACN’s second Industry Integrity Forum in Cairo, which brought together more than 20 representatives from across the maritime value chain. The forum provided a space for companies to share experiences, discuss integrity risks in practice, and reflect on how collective action can support ethical decision‑making while doing business in Egypt. This latest engagement reflects MACN’s approach in Egypt: pairing policy‑level collaboration with hands‑on implementation at ports and sustained dialogue with the private sector. Previous initiatives have included the launch of private sector integrity forums, cooperation protocols with authorities, and capacity‑building efforts aimed at reducing corruption risks while improving operational efficiency.
MACN looks forward to continuing its partnership with MTLS and the Suez Canal Authority, with the next Industry Integrity Forum planned for fall 2026. Together, these efforts aim to embed integrity into everyday maritime operations and support a more predictable and transparent operating environment in Egyptian ports.
