MACN Trains 240 Seafarer Cadets on Integrity and Their Rights at Sea

What happens when a room full of future seafarers is asked about corruption, recruitment scams, and their rights at sea?

Recently, MACN engaged with 240 cadets across two institutions in India through the “Integrity at Sea: Next Generation of Seafarers” program. 80 cadets from Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training -HIMT and 160 first-year cadets from Amet University Chennai.

The discussions focused on practical challenges future seafarers may encounter, including recruitment scams, unethical demands, reporting mechanisms, and seafarers’ rights under MLC 2006.

What stood out most was the feedback from the cadets themselves. They asked for more real-life cases, practical career guidance, financial awareness, and interactive learning that prepares them for situations they may face in the workplace.

Awareness is only the first step. Building confidence to recognize risks, understand rights, seek support, and act with integrity is what ultimately makes a difference.
